Secured communication is driving the future for connected cars

Last updated: 28 November 2019

From four-wheeled mobile offices to driverless cars and even windshields with integrated Google Glass, the possibilities to enhance transportation and improve our way of life are endless.

As with most things Apple get involved in, the future of connected cars has become a hot topic over the past few months. Since the launch of Apple’s CarPlay earlier this year – announced at the Geneva International Motor Show – the Californian giant has been spreading the word that a relationship between people’s iPhones and their cars will make driving ‘smarter, safer and more fun’.

“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing at Apple. As it stands, car manufacturers that will launch CarPlay compatible models this year are: Ferrari, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, with the likes of Ford and BMW having expressed their intentions for the future. You can read what the chief infotainment officer at General Motors, among other major players in the industry, think of CarPlay here.

But connected cars are not only about infotainment… global automakers are focused on eliminating emissions and reducing crash fatalities while enhancing driving pleasure. Sometimes referred to as the ‘magic triangle’ of automotive innovation, carmakers carefully consider three core topics when making design and engineering updates:

  • Ecology – reducing carbon emissions that can negatively impact the environment
  • Safety – producing safer vehicles that protect against crash fatalities
  • Emotion – providing drivers with a sophisticated vehicle that is fun to drive

Secure embedded connectivity is at the heart of a new breed of connected car applications that are helping carmakers meet their ambitious goals of enhancing the emotional connection to the vehicle while striving for zero emissions and zero fatalities. As a leader in digital security and M2M technology, Gemalto provides leading edge automotive connectivity technologies across the entire spectrum of telematics and connected car applications.

Our secure M2M solutions cover everything from Infotainment, such as the Gemalto-powered, first to market embedded LTE Audi connect infotainment solution introduced last year, and can enable next generation telematics applications that manage engine operations and service updates. These Gemalto-powered systems can automatically provide optimised trip management to avoid hazards and delays; and in some cases, they may even suggest public transportation as the best option (!)

We also see car-sharing and fleet management as an integral part of the intermodal transportation of the future.  Flexible car sharing services are growing in popularity, especially in urban areas where owning your own vehicle provides more obstacles than solutions.
