The IoT World Hackathon – are you ready?

Last updated: 26 January 2023

It’s nearly time for the kickoff of the IoT World Hackathon – where some of the world’s best minds will battle it out in a 30-hour app building contest at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco.

For those unfamiliar with it, the Hackathon is a not-for-profit event created with the aim of encouraging teams of technologists and innovators to attempt to shape, or in some cases re-shape, the Internet of Things. Within the frantic 30 hour period, developers, designers, entrepreneurs, programmers and inventors (some participants could be classified as all of the above!) will conjure and build prototypes, and then present them to a team of expert judges for a chance to win prizes, recognition, publicity and more.

In particular, we can’t wait to see innovations in the field of Remote Monitoring and Control (perhaps like the winning idea in our #IoTMaker competition) which can be game changers for the Industrial Internet of Things, smart cities, the environment, and even safety. So we’ll be looking out for keen participants with a focus on these sectors, as well as any other innovations that could help improve the world we live in.

In fact, we’ll be doing more than just keeping an eye out; we’re offering support to Hackathon hopefuls at the show. As one of the event’s sponsors, we’re providing three of our own specialist mentors who’ll assist groups or individuals who decide to build their projects using one of our Concept Boards throughout the event. For additional information on the Concept Boards that’ll be available in the developer zone, please visit our developer discussion page here, where you can ask questions and trade information with your peers.

If you’re unsure of why you should consider a Concept Board for the event, here are a few reasons why:

  • The Concept Board’s EHS6 Java module (2G/3G) enables you to develop a connected application with an open application platform
  • The support of Arduino compatible shields with many sensors
  • It’s supported natively by the cloud-based SensorLogic Application Enablement Platform, which removes the complexity of M2M projects by taking care of communication and data management requirements. The SensorLogic platform comes with an out-of-the-box administration portal in the cloud and offers standards-based Web APIs, so it is easier than ever to develop your own IoT application using guidelines which can be found on our developer community site.

So, what are you waiting for? Make sure you get involved and in touch with our community soon to secure our support with your project. Even if you’re not at the event, if you’re interested you can get involved with debates and idea sharing – or you could make something where you are, like an M2M-connected plant called Horst perhaps?

If you are going to the event – good luck! You could create something amazing and win a range of prizes, including a Sparkfun voucher from us. And finally, don’t forget to let us know if you’re attending by tweeting us @Gemalto or @GemaltoM2M, and if you want our support, let us know here.
