The future of tourism is mobile – where to go in Barcelona after Mobile World Congress?

Last updated: 20 March 2014

Frequent travelers will be pleased to know that mobile technology is set to make more of the world accessible in new and exciting ways thanks to a host of innovations coming to mobile platforms in the near future. Augmented reality and wearable tech can enhance a travel experience for business or pleasure at the touch of a button, or move of a head.

Most of us already use apps overseas, over WiFi or on international data plans, but even this is being usurped by the hands-free technology on the horizon. Google Glass, for example, can provide information both old and new around major tourist attractions, so you can not only learn about the great things to do in Barcelona, but get to them avoiding the traffic too. Some notable applications already prominent in the Travel 3.0 space (as Marty McPadden refers to it) include Waalkz and BuUuk which provide augmented information about important sights and restaurants.

If you’re heading to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month, there are dozens of local apps for travel and tourism; starting from those focusing on rural tourism and hiking to those working as a complete city or museum guides.

The ‘field trip on glass’ video below gives a good indication of how it all works. With information ‘at our eyeballs’ instead of simply at our fingertips, tourists enter a new dimension of immersive travel.

Security is always a big feature at Mobile World Congress and the idea of mobile technology integrating with travel is a fantastic concept for business travelers keen to keep their career active outside of the office, wherever they are in the world. However, with all new experiences, can come uncertainly and that’s where Gemalto steps in to ensure convenience overseas, doesn’t compromise security.

Another look at our ‘Where’s Joe?’ video reinforces the message that mobile is more than just the connection between a human and a mobile phone, it’s the internet of everything and just about every aspect of daily life.
