The Internet of Things (IoT) is going through a growth spurt. Gartner analysts estimate that there will be 20.8 billion connected things by 2020, up 225% from the 6.4 billion things estimated to be in use this year.
The question business leaders and information security experts need to come together to answer is how can security practices keep up? That’s the topic I’ll be covering during my presentation, Explore the Security of IoT: Trust Comes First, at RSA Conference 2016 this year.
Protecting connected devices themselves is critical, but it’s only one part of the equation.
While cyber criminals will attempt to compromise devices in order to use them for their own malicious purposes, you need to expect them to also target communications between those devices and their “master” as well as the master of the devices itself. All of these are potential treasure troves of valuable data.
Because we know more connected things will be introduced for use in virtually every industry segment, we likewise know that there will be new potential vulnerabilities responsible infosec professionals need to plan for accordingly.
And that means knowing exactly how you can secure the identities of every device and every master of devices as well as how to use strong encryption effectively.
