“Over 2.5 quintillion# bytes of data are created every single day, and it’s only going to grow from there. By 2020, it’s estimated that 1.7MB of data will be created every second for every person on earth.”

#quintillion is a cardinal number followed by 30 zeroes

Data, data and more data! And this is only going to grow as the digital economy continues to evolve. Make no mistake, data is not only about Personal Identifiable Information (PII) but also valuable information such as Intellectual Property (eg product designs, proprietary software), financial information and legal documents (eg contracts).

Digital transformation presents Australian and New Zealand organisations with many business advantages but is data security top of mind when they are planning to transform their business to meet the digital age? Or is security an afterthought, causing panic after a data breach?

With unrelenting incidents of cyberattacks and data breaches across the globe, regulators certainly recognise the need to protect sensitive data by releasing regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, etc and closer to home, OAIC’s Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme and APRA’s Prudential Standard CPS 234 recently.

So what should organisations in Australia and New Zealand do to adapt to these changes safely and comply with new data protection and privacy regulations?
