Driver’s Licenses…they’re going digital

Last updated: 20 August 2024

Thanks to the emergence of digital wallets and digital ID technologies, a lot of the identity verification and payment processes in our daily lives are going digital. While using mobile travel documents or paying for goods via Apple Pay or Google Pay are relatively mainstream nowadays, the latest document to go digital is the driver’s license.

And it’s easy to see why. Unlike with traditional driver’s licenses, when using a digital driving license as ID, citizens have complete control over the personal data they choose to share with third parties, truly putting them in the driver’s seat. By not having to physically hand over the digital wallet, with verification happening remotely, the highest level of privacy is guaranteed.

From a security perspective, users don’t need to worry about taking out a separate ID they might lose, and advanced cryptography and real-time authentication technologies are employed to prevent malicious bodies gaining access to sensitive data, or attempting to use your license. Needless to say, convenience is a big pull too. The universal mobile format is ready on demand for a host of identity verification scenarios, with the automated validation process benefitting drivers, law enforcement, and service providers alike.

In this article for Biometric Update, John Cullen, Strategic Marketing Director for Digital Identity at Thales, takes a deep dive into what the future of mobile driver’s licenses could look like, and the barriers to them becoming a mainstream, widely trusted form of identity.
