Our mini-guide to coming up with your #IoTMaker idea

Last updated: 26 January 2023

If you haven’t heard already, the Gemalto #IoTMaker Challenge is in full swing. We’re asking readers of our blog and the wider developer community to share their ideas for the next great IoT innovation – whether it’s a practical solution to improve efficiency or a crazy idea to make life a little easier at home. The best entries will win a shiny new iPhone 6, as well as be built for real for the world to see at Mobile World Congress.

We know it can take a bit of thought to unearth that great IoT idea, so here are some tips on how to find that inspiration:

  1. Think of all the things that annoy you about everyday life. Try to capture them as they emerge rather than thinking back to them. For example: you ordered a pizza and didn’t know where the driver was after thirty minutes of waiting, you forgot to turn off the oven when leaving the house, you’ve come home to a frozen tap, the gutters on your house get clogged up with leaves in the autumn etc. It can be helpful to segment your life into different activities – for example, personal finance, health, work, travel or home.
  2. Next, imagine what would have made that more convenient for you – whether a reminder to take action, or automation of the process. For the previous examples these might be real-time tracking of your pizza delivery driver, a text that reminds you to turn off the oven, a temperature sensor that turns on the hot water when taps get too cold, or even a robotic drone that clears your gutters when they get blocked.
  3. Finally, boil it down to a single line of copy and send it to us! You can enter via Twitter using the hashtag #IoTMaker, email us at IoTMaker@gemalto.com or leave a comment on this blog post.

And that’s about it! If inspiration strikes and you have more than one idea, feel free to submit as many as you like. For more information on the competition, click here.

Good luck!

Update: The entry window for the IoT Maker challenge has now closed, stay tuned to the blog for more information.
